Mumia Abu-Jamal is a radical black journalist who has been on death row in the Pennsylvania for 17 years. He was framed by racist cops. He was alleged to have killed a Policeman who was beating up his brother. His judge was known as the hanging judge, who refused to allow Mumia to represent himself, removed him from his own trial for protesting, and allocated him a novice lawyer. Mumia was refused the money necessary to obtain independent forensic advice. Since his trial, evidence has emerged that the bullet that killed the cop was .38 calibre, whereas the gun Mumia carried took .44 bullets. Mumia, who was injured by the dead policeman, was alleged to have confessed in the hospital. The cop who "heard" the confession didn't tell anyone for 2½ months! Eleven Black jurors were barred and only 2 of the jury were Black, in a city (Philadelphia) were 51% of the population are Black. In Pennsylvania 9% of people are Black but 61% on death row are Black. The Prosecution, supported by the judge, refused to divulge to the Defence the addresses of two witnesses who stated that someone else was seen running away from the crime scene. Mumia was under FBI surveillance since the age of 16. He is an honorary member of the National Union of Journalists in Britain. In April every West Coast Port shut down in protest at his proposed execution. If he is executed, and a decision is expected in October, then he will be the first person to be executed for their political beliefs in the US since the 1920's.
